Inquiring Minds want to Know.

Better than telling you over the phone or describing in words here,
I decided to post some photos of our garden.
Spring is springing, and so is our garden!!!
Look closely at all the photos, something really is there.
In addition to the mint plant, the dill weed is starting to bloom.
The cilantro is taking longer, but is did see one sprout today. (no cilantro photo, only dill)

The most satisfying plant for beginners...lettuce.
Immediate results...two varieties.

Our broccoli plants, on the left
The 2 bell pepper, one banana pepper, and jalapeño to the far right.

WHAT, a strawberry plant?!?  I had to rub my eyes!!!
I'm soooo excited.  I never thought the strawberry plants would make.
Whoopiee!!!

Two potato plants, have already sprung up!!!

Make that 3 potato plants,  this one is just now pushing the dirt up.
Lovely.  I cannot wait to show Little Bit her potatoes tonight!

Can you tell what these two snaky looking vegetables are?
You might have to click on the picture to make it bigger to see them.
ASPARAGUS!
I have asparagus!!!!
Proof, miracles do happen.
We can only thank God for these,
that is the only way that I am able to grow asparagus.
I must *note* right now that I am very tempted to pick these two tiny asparaguses,
but I'm going to wait.

I decided to plant my lemon or lime or whatever this is tree that produced
little tiny lemons/limes last year.
I had it in a container on my patio.
It has survived for two years in that tiny container,
so I decided to reward it by planting it in the ground.
It has kindly responded by putting lots of tiny shoots all over its branches.

And last, but perhaps the most satisfying,
The Onions.
These, I can look out my bedroom window and see them peeping up from the ground.
I was so proud to see them shooting up first the other day,
that Little Bit and M and I went out with our flashlights
to see these veges at 8:00 p.m.
Little Bit was super proud of the ones she planted,
and she should be.
She is a good gardener.
And a great daughter.

Our Quasi-Garden

We planted a quasi-garden this year.  We being Little Bit and myself.

In the flowerbed behind the screened in porch, along the fence line, we planted 2 broccoli plants, 2 bell pepper plants (because I thought they might do well, not because I like bell pepper), 1 banana pepper plant (because that's what you plant in a garden or so it seems to me), 1 jalapeño plant (because we live in Houston, and that's what we Houstonians plant in our quasi-gardens), some asparagus (i'll be surprised if anything makes of this, but i thought i'd give it a go anyway), some strawberry plants (if these make, then we will prove the idea of miracles), and potatoes (an homage to Mamaw, and talked about Mamaw and her potatoes when planting).  Little Bit planted all of the potatoes.  She liked planting them the most, I think.

In two containers on the patio, we planted in the first one, two types of lettuce, from seed.  And in the second container, we planted 1 mint plant, and cilantro seed, and dill weed seed.

And along the fence by our neighbor's yard in the flower bed, we still needed to plant a patch of onions.  The bulb bag of onions comes with 90 bulbs.  So, we ran out of room in the other flower bed.  Thus, we planted these in this spot, where I can look out my bedroom window and see our onions.  Daisy did a great job helping me plant the onions, too.

And now for the results, thus far…

  • The lettuce container is full of little lettuce baby leaves just popping out of the ground.
  • The dill weed has a few popping up.
  • And the onions already have one inch sprouts shooting up out of the soil!!!

Everything else is doing it's thing.  Although, we have something already munching a little on the leaves of the mint, the broccoli, and the pepper plants?  But, not a lot of munching.  So, I'd say we're doing well with our quasi-garden.

Bon Temp

It was a much more mellow Fat Tuesday this year.
But, we all enjoyed it.

And everyone found a baby. :)

A weekend at home

Well, this weekend was spent at home. The kids had Presidents Day off from school on Monday, so a few pics from the weekend.
Little Bit & Kitty enjoyed some tv time. Kitty love sitting above people's heads.

Bird houses were the event du'jour.
They still love building these and they are more elaborate than ever.

I had a major pile of sticks and M burned them in the fire pit.
It was a cool day, perfect for a fire in the fire pit.

Little Bit loves scooter riding with her friend.

I was busy raking leaves.
And what's sad is I'm only halfway finished.
YIKES.

It is finished. At least for today.

It is finished.  At least for today.
I'm sick of this project.
Had to break up the time so much, it took forever.
Now it needs some touch ups and
I've decided with my decorator sister,
that I'm adding a plexi-glass top for the desk area.
So, that will be next week or whenever I feel up to it again.
Plus, those touch ups, because i dinged the hey out of it when I dropped one of my big photos.

 Ta-Da.

Soups On

Today was Soup Day.  With a Valentine theme.
Oh, how do I love Thee, Soup, let me count the ways...

I forgot...it was the most amazing thing...

It was the most amazing thing...(i forgot to start off a conversation like this, so here it is)

It was the most amazing thing.  Yesterday, when driving home, I turned into our neighborhood only to see in the rear view mirror, just as I was making the turn.  And LOW AND BEHOLD, right behind our car were 5, count them 5, fancy sports cars.  I think the first was an Audi R8, then 3 Ferraris  (one was a spider, i think or a 458).  And I couldn't tell the last car make.  But, same low, sleek profile.  Big Kid was with me. So, I stopped my big ole blue bonnet bus and we watched the surprise, super sports car parade.

You will never believe this... so last night I went for a bike ride.  I was going to do the "Kroger loop" a 3 mile loop.  But, Big Kid saw me getting on my bike and wanted to go for a run.  So, he ran beside my bike and we did the mile loop.  He runs like really fast.  I was quite impressed.  When we got back to the house, I decided to make another loop and go ahead and do the Kroger loop.  Low and behold...After about 2 miles of the 3 mile journey,  I see this animal scurry into the bushes all crouched down and nervous like.  Well, low and behold, I realized just as I'm passing this critter that it was a skunk!  Thankfully, I was 30 seconds behind the skunk and didn't get a blast.  That would have been especially bad, as we were leaving an hour later to go see the Del McCurrey band.  And I would have hated to stink up the close theater seating.  Whew!

By the way.  The Del McCurrey Band is just as great as they were when we saw them 10 or so years ago in Arcadia, Louisiana.  If you like blue grass, then you would love them.  And you better go see him live soon, he's 73.  We also saw another good new upcoming band called MilkDrive.  They were so good I bought their cd and already have it in my car playing.

It's been a busy weekend.
Little Bit:  hang out at local bi-weekly event for kids her age, sleepover, baton, art class, Del McCurrey concert, acolyte at church, now playing with neighbor kid.
Big Kid: Shopping at Academy,  waking up real early with huge lightening storm, Band Solo Contest, playing at friends house, Del McCurrey concert, church, and having friend over for afternoon.
M: Waking up real early, going to work, then going to school by 9 a.m. for all day, After school extra lesson, meet with school group, Shopping at academy, waking up early with big lightening storm and whiney dog, School, Del  McCurrey Concert, church, lunch, nap on couch.
Me: just getting everyone everywhere and making sure they are all prepared and calm.

evra body was kung fu fighting

Last Night:

"Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting" or at least Big Kid and I were last night.  We're either practicing for a movie role or WWE Raw.  And might I just say, we're pretty awesome to watch.  Little Bit came in and was our audience, but we believe in audience participation.  So, Little Bit joined into the faux fighting.  Think Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon meets the Disney Channel.  See? Pure awesomeness.

We, also, created our secret family handshake: Squirrel Bumps.  I'd say it's a secret, but Little Bit told me she might be showing her friends today.  So, if Squirrel Bumps takes off, I was the creator.

And i think I might start at least 3 conversations a day that begin with one of the following phrases:

  • "It was the most exciting thing..."
  • "You will never believe what happen to me..."
  • "When I thought it couldn't get any better..."

And perhaps add in the phrase "Low and Behold" into a story once a day.

Until Later.  Squirrel Bumps. -cb
