Birthday Talk

Tomorrow is Big Kid's birthday.

Me: "What kind of cake do you want for your birthday tomorrow, chocolate or white?"
Big Kid: "Well, I want mini-cupcakes."
Me: "O.K. what kind of mini-cupcakes, chocolate or white?"
Big Kid: "The ones with the icing."
Me: "Yes. Got that. O.K. Chocolate or White?"
Big Kid: "No the mini-brownies with icing and can you bring them to school?"
Me: "Yes, I can bring them to school. Wait, are you talking about the ones at Kroger?"
Big Kid: "Yes. They're good."
Me: "You want me to get the ones from Kroger and not make them?"
Big Kid: "Yes. I want the ones from Kroger. They're good."
Me: "Oh, o.k. Well, do you want me to make the cake for at home with the family?"
Big Kid: "Sure, if you want."
Me: "O.K. Chocolate or White?"
Big Kid: "Chocolate. But, for school get the mini-brownies from Kroger."
Me: "o.k."

Big Kid was not thrilled with the idea of moving his birthday party, but we didn't have much of a choice. So, he had been kind of not too happy about it lately. Last night, Big Kid's eyes got sparkly when he spotted two big wrapped presents in my bedroom.

Big Kid: "Are those for me?"
Me: "One is."
As I leave the room I hear the wrapping getting heavily fondled. Later, I'm in the dining room and I hear the wrapping paper being groped again.
Me: "Leave the present alone. I don't want you guessing what it is."
Big Kid, talking to his dad: "Watch this." He rubs his hands on the gift again.
Me: "I told you quit touching that gift."
Big Kid giggles and comes into the dining room.
Big Kid: "Do you have a camera?"
Me: "Yes. Do you want to borrow it for something?"
Big Kid: "No, I mean do you have a camera in your room? How do you see me playing with my present?"
Me: "I have eyes everywhere."
Big Kid: "Oh."

Later that night, after being tucked in bed as I was headed downstairs.
Big Kid: "If that one present is for me, then who is the other present for?"
Me: "One is for you and the other is for another boy you know."
Big Kid starts naming off all his friends.
Me, one after another: "No...nope...no."
Finally he guesses it: "Dad?"
Me: "Maybe." with a big smile, "Goodnight."
I head downstairs.
Big Kid: "Mommmmm, can you come back upstairs? I want to ask you something."
I trudge up the stairs again.
Me: "What is it?"
Big Kid: "Come here I need to whisper it."
Me, I get close: "O.K. What is it?"
Big Kid, in a hushed tone: "Tell me what you got Dad. I won't tell him."
Ahahahahahahahahaha. He was trying to trick me. Good for Big Kid!
Me, i whispered back: "I can't tell you, because then you would know your present. goodnight."
